AAD 252 3b: Insoles

I found the embroidered work of these Chinese artists who created these insoles to be beautiful and amazing pieces of art. I am wondering if the soles of this era are specific to the types of object described in the article such as flowers, dragons and birds? Are other objects acceptable in this form of artistry?

Culturally feet can be decorated or dressed to show beauty, these insoles are just another example of how a culture can enhance the foot.  In American we paint our toenails, wear designer shoes, match our shoes with our outfits, own an outrageous number of shoes and so forth and in China through this art feet are connected to family, love and status.  I view feet differently now, realizing the history and importance the foot has in our cultures, both modernly and historically.
